Mums – You Didn’t Just Birth A Baby.

Share

You birthed a whole new version of you!

Becoming a mum changes your life in ways no one can prepare you for.

You expect the sleepless nights, the endless nappies, the mess and chaos that

multiplies overnight… but what about you?

The truth is your body changes from pregnancy to postpartum and your hormones

go on a rollercoaster ride that can affect everything from your skin to your energy to

your mood.

Your emotions shift and motherhood brings a love SO big it almost knocks the wind

out of you but, also moments of overwhelm, identity loss and exhaustion.

Your old life has ended – no matter how much you don’t want this to be true or things

to change. The spontaneous nights out, the long Sunday lie-ins, even just drinking a

coffee while it’s still hot – all gone.

And here’s the thing no one says enough to women – you didn’t just have a

baby. You birthed a whole new version of you.

The Magnitude Of What Just Happened

Biologically, emotionally and even spiritually, you aren’t the same woman you were

before. Here’s why:

  1. Your hormones: Pregnancy floods your body with oestrogen, progesterone and

oxytocin (the love and bonding hormone). Then, postpartum, these levels crash. That alone can trigger mood swings, anxiety, or low energy.

  1. Brain rewiring: Research shows a mother’s brain literally reshapes itself to focus on

empathy, protection, and connection. It’s why you hear your baby’s cry in the middle of the night before anyone else does.

  1. Identity shift: Psychologists call it ‘matrescence’. It’s like adolescence, but for motherhood. It’s the huge transition where you leave behind the “old you” and step into a new identity and yes, it can feel messy and emotional.

This isn’t just about “bouncing back.” This is about honouring the transformation you’ve just been/are going through.

Why Self-Care Isn’t Selfish, It’s Survival

I know self-care sounds impossible when you’re barely showering and reheating the

same cup of tea three times.

But here’s the truth: when you care for you, you care for your whole family. A calmer, healthier, happier you = a calmer, happier, healthier home.

And self-care doesn’t have to be big spa weekends (although, yes please). It’s about small, daily rituals that nourish your body, hormones, and emotions.

5 Loving Ways To Care For The New You

  1. Sleep like it’s medicine (because it is!)

Your body heals, your hormones balance and your brain detoxes while you sleep. Even if it’s broken sleep right now, nap whenever you can (ignore the laundry) and if someone offers to watch the baby while you nap (even if you just lie down and rest) say “yes please!”. Dim lights after dark as this helps your body make melatonin, your sleepy hormone. Swap scrolling for a calming herbal tea and a few pages of a book before bed if you find it hard to relax/unwind.

  1. Feed your body like it’s as precious as your baby’s (because it is!)

Postpartum hormones need steady blood sugar, protein, and healthy fats. Think: a decent breakfast as much as possible – eggs, oats, nuts, berries, yoghurt etc to help your energy and mood. Soups, stews, slow-cooked meals are as they’re easy to digest and hormone-friendly comfort food. Drink water steadily through the day as dehydration worsens hormonal imbalance, stress and fatigue.

  1. Move gently, not punishingly

Forget the “get your body back” nonsense. Move because it feels good, not as punishment. Gentle walks in nature are proven to lower cortisol (your stress hormone). Gentle stretching will help your circulation and calms your nervous system. Dance in the kitchen with the baby when you have some energy as this counts as exercise and joy therapy.

  1. Ask for help before you break

You’re not meant to do this alone. Humans have always raised babies in villages, not isolated houses with just Amazon Prime and a partner who works for help. Say yes when someone offers to cook or babysit or help in any small or big way. Swap “I’m fine” for “I ‘d love some help with…”. It’s strength, not weakness, to ask for support.

  1. Create 10-Minute joy rituals just for you

Every day, give yourself one thing that’s just for you like watching your fave TV show (even if it’s only 10 mins) or sitting with a cuppa and journal about what you’re finding amazing and what you’re finding tough. If you’re having a tough day, shift the energy by putting on a real feel-good song. Any small thing you do for you, remind you that you still matter.

Motherhood isn’t about “losing yourself.” It’s about rebuilding yourself with love,

boundaries, and rituals that nourish the new you. You didn’t just bring new life into the world; you brought a new version of yourself in too. One who deserves the same care, compassion, and love you pour into everyone else.

Investing puts your capital at risk. The value of investments can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in. If you’re not sure whether an investment is right for you, it’s best to speak to a qualified financial adviser.
